Hip replacement surgery is a decision that should not be taken lightly, as it is a major procedure with potential risks and complications. Regular monitoring and assessment by Dr Olivier can help determine when conservative treatments are no longer sufficient and when surgical intervention may be beneficial for improving function and reducing pain in individuals suffering from advanced hip osteoarthritis or other degenerative conditions affecting the joint.
There are 7 signs to look out for that may indicate it is time to consider a Total Hip Replacement:
1. Pain with Activity
Patients will typically experience pain when performing weight-bearing activities like walking long distances or using stairs. It can also be seen during more routine movements like bending over to tie your shoes or getting in and out of the car.
2. Delayed Hip Pain
This type of pain develops after being on your feet all day. It can occur in the evening and can last several days later.
3. Pain that Interrupts Sleep
An inflamed hip can cause a deep, aching pain that can prevent you from going to sleep but can also wake you up at night depending on the position of your hip.
4. Bone on Bone Arthritis
Bone-on-bone arthritis can be confirmed with an X-ray and represents the last stage of arthritis in the hip. This happens when all the cartilage in your hip is worn out and the two bone ends are rubbing against each other.
5. Stiffness in Your Hip Joints
As inflammation in your hip progresses, the surrounding tissue like the muscles and tendons can tighten. This can limit your overall range of motion and prevent you from doing simple things such as bending over or crossing your leg over your other knee.
6. Visible Changes to Your Hip
Visible changes to the hip can manifest as visible swelling to the groin area or on the front of your thigh.
7. Lifestyle Limitations
Bone-on-bone arthritis can be confirmed with an X-ray and represents the last stage of arthritis in the hip. This happens when all the cartilage in your hip is worn out and the two bone ends are rubbing against each other.
As an orthopaedic surgeon, it is always my goal to treat patients with non-operative options first, whether that includes anti-inflammatories, physical therapy, activity modifications, weight loss programs or even injections. But when those options fail and one or more of the above 7 signs become a real impact in your life, that’s when it’s time to get in touch with my office to make an appointment.
